There's a lot of reasons for moving away from Divi Website Builder and probably the main ones are:

  • It is proprietary and that it is always a red flag
  • It is a WordPress theme as well as a WordPress Page Builder

Combining a Theme with a Page Builder unequivocally limits your choices in the management of your website. Themes are a personal choice and so are page builders.

Divi is a very popular WordPress theme with a built in Page builder.  Its popularity is mainly due to aggressive affiliate marketing and a degree of ease of use. Most people have an axe to grind, including us, but a lot of 'reviews' of Divi will have affiliate links. This clearly introduces a potential bias to say the least.

Once you deactivate your Divi theme your website pages are riddled with shortcodes.
This takes a lot of time to manually remove them and then rebuild the layout of ALL of your pages using you're newly chosen theme/builder. It's easy to feel trapped, because you are.

Elegant Themes used to have a large collection of very stylish themes but then they stopped building themes and promoted their website builder called 'Divi'.

It's very popular because it allows non technical people to drag and drop elements on a web page. However, it has its caveats. It looks very nice, usually, but it can load slowly.

It's very hard to move away from Divi because it has no export feature, you're locked into it, much like Wix and Squarespace etc.

Basically, it's proprietary and that's ALWAYS a red flag.

Divi has its issues and there's better choices out there now.

We've tried most of the options and are following the new ones as they develop. We don't have any affiliate links with any of them so we can advise which ones suit you on a case by case basis.

Known:

  1. Generatepress/GenerateBlocks. This has been our favourite Theme for building the headers and footers of websites for quite some time now. Still going from strength to strength and very fast to load.
  2. BeaverBuilder/Themer. We don't use Themer because we prefer Generatepress. Beaver Builder is the most solid drag and drop page builder out there.
  3. Dynamik. This was out go to theme builder but things have moved on.
  4. Elementor. Really wanted to like this but it's just too flaky.
  5. Divi. We used this for a while but there's just too many issues and it's difficult to move to any other theme.
  6. Gutenburg. Blocks are the way to go but the current set aren't there yet.
  7. Avada, X and other best avoided Code Canyon things such as WP Bakery. Slow and bloated. Avoid.

Still mulling over:

  1. Breakdance
  2. Kadence
  3. Bricks

Preferred contact method: This could be a telephone number, an enquiry form or an email address. That's a proper email - not Gary@gmail! - we can redirect to that one if needed 🙂

Any products used or brand names if a selling point: Sometimes people are actively looking for a particular brand that they want including so we'll make sure that is included in text as well as a logo so that it shows up in any searches.

Testimonials: It's always nice to see quotes from happy customers and it lends weight to the reviews to build a positive picture of you as a trusted trader. We can present these in a number of ways.

Our prices start from only £500 and for some businesses that’s all you need. To be fair that is a bit basic so we'll let you know what spending a little more gets you.
There are small recurring costs for a domain name and hosting but these are charged at cost or you can pay them yourself.

Domain names and website hosting are annual charges wherever you go:
Domains are usually between £10 to £20 per year.
Hosting varies a lot and there’s quite a few things to watch out for. we can advise with no axe to grind, no affiliate links or any funny business.
Is there a perfect web host? We haven’t seen one yet but there are some well known (by us) good and bad ones.
Cheapest is never best for hosting and can cause problems for you and Google. Literally a false economy. Good hosting is available from less than £200 per year - with the first year usually available for about £60.
The expensive stuff is usually more than you need, so a compromise is best and we currently recommend Siteground as the best compromise.

Claim website design and ongoing costs as expenses. There are a number of ways to claim most or all of what you spend promoting your business with a website. Please ask your accountant the best way to suit your business.
